Tips for Safe Snowmobiling in Wayne County

Early snowfall throughout the Snowbelt greeted winter enthusiasts in early November this year.  Although Wayne County is still waiting for a substantial snowfall, the early blast was a welcome taste of things to come this winter.  Mother Nature has generated a great deal of activity at snow shows, in snowmobile dealer showrooms, in local clubhouses, and at snowmobile associations across the area.  Unfortunately, sometimes safety can take a backseat to excitement.  Following these tips can keep you protected on your adventures once the snow begins to fall here in Michigan.

  • Keep your machine in top shape.  Use your owners manual to keep up with regular maintanance and check with your dealer if you encounter any concerns or problems.  There are also associations and clubs in Wayne County that can assist with safety checks.
  • Avoid Water.  Ice gives you far less traction for starting, turning and stopping than snow.  Many collisions occur on lakes because riders can't control their snowmobiles with the same precision as on snow.  In addition, there is always the risk that the ice isn't thick enough and you and your snowmobile could plunge into the icy water.
  • Don't ride alone.  Taking friends or family not only makes snowmobiling more fun, it's safer.  Letting people know when and where you're going can also prevent unnecessary concern and searches in Wayne County.
  • Don't mix riding and alcohol.  Consuming alcohol may make you feel warm, but does nothing to increase body temperature.  Because of this, hypothermia can be a real danger, not to mention the reduced reaction time and ability to make good decisions that result from too much alcohol.

This video reinforces and adds to these safety tips!

Following these safety tips for snowmobiling, along with common sense, will help make your snowmobiling adventures in Wayne County rewarding and safe!
