Tips for Safe Snowmobiling in Macomb County

It will soon be snowing in much of Macomb County, and that means snowmobile adventures for thousands of enthusiasts.  Snowmobiling is more than a mode of winter transportation.  It tends to be a family sport, with parents and children spending around $24 billion annually on backcountry fun.  It can be dangerous to hit the trails and slopes in frigid weather, but with the right preparation and equipment, you can keep sledding risks to a minimum.  Taking these precautions will keep safety in the forefront of your mind this winter.

  • Don't ride alone.  Taking friends or family not only makes snowmobiling more fun, it's safer.  One of you can always go back for help if the need arises.  Letting people know when and where you're going can also prevent unnecessary concern and searches.
  • Keep your machine in top shape.  Use your owners manual to keep up with regular maintanance and check with your dealer if you encounter any concerns or problems.  There are also associations and clubs in Macomb County that can assist with safety checks.
  • Don't mix riding with alcohol.  Consuming alcohol may make you feel warm, but does nothing to increase body temperature.  Because of these, hypothermia can be a real danger, not to mention the reduced reaction time and ability to make good decisions that result from too much alcohol.
  • Avoid Water.  Ice gives you far less traction for starting, turning and stopping than snow.  Many collisions occur on lakes because riders can't control their snowmobiles with the same precision as on snow.  In addition, there is always the risk that the ice isn't thick enough and you and your snowmobile could plunge into the icy water.
